YAMATO ISHIDA
Name (English): Matt Ishida Name Meaning: Matthew, the origin of the name Matt, means "Gift from God". Name (Japanese): Ishida, Yamato (石田 ヤマト) Name Meaning: Yamato and his brother, Takeru are names referencing a Japanese legendary figure named "Yamatotakeru". Ishida means "rocky rice paddy". Voice Actor: Michael Reisz Seiyuu: Yuto Kazama Age: 11/12 (presumably) Hometowns: Heighten View Terrace (pre-series), Odaiba (onward). Grade: No grades are given in the English. Japanese says 5th grade (probably). School: Odaiba Elementary Catergory: The cool kid. Height: Unknown Weight: Unknown Build: Skinny Blood Type: Unknown Birthday: Unknown Zodiac: Unknown Clothing: Forest green turtleneck, jeans, sky blue belt (seen in WereGarurumon's Diner near the end), and brown boots. Boxers/Briefs: Briefs, apparently. >> Item: Harmonica Theme: "Run with the Wind" and "The Key to Granting Wishes" Partner / Digimon Theme: "Our Melody" Crest: Friendship Crest Meaning: Yamato's crest symbol is the ying-yang, which "represents the ancient Chinese understanding of how things work. The outer circle represents "everything", while the black and white shapes within the circle represent the interaction of two energies, called "yin" (black) and "yang" (white), which cause everything to happen. They are not completely black or white, just as things in life are not completely black or white, and they cannot exist without each other". (Wikipedia) Digivice Color: Blue Element: Ice Digi-Egg Design: Blue traingles. Digimon: Punimon, Tsunomon, Gabumon, Garurumon, Weregarurumon, Metalgarurumon, Omnimon. Generic Profile: Yamato Ishida is the labeled "cool kid" of the group, and the regular anime emo. He has the typical blonde hair-blue eyed bishie look, too. In the begining of the series, we simply know him as that, with an overprotective brother complex, and not sure why. We know he's caring and doesn't always agree with Taichi. Taichi is very straight forward, while Yamato is rational. He seems to keep to himself about things that trouble him. You could almost say he and Takeru have their own little world. People label Yamato as cold and rebellious, but I don't find either of these to be true, rather misinterpreted. Extended Profile (spoilers for Season One): Although we learn early on that Yamato's parents are divorced, it isn't until the end of the Vademon/Myotismon arc that it really takes effect. Sure, Yamato has freaked over protecting Takeru until now, and although it is never revealed as to really why, most people assume that it is because he was seperated from his little brother during the divorce (and later we learn that Yamato chose to go with his father, instead of his mother.) Let me make a note that Yamato and his Dad get along pretty well (despite in fanfics he's often portrayed as a drunk and a bad father, most likely due to his late hours at work and lack of affection towards his son, some say. I like to think Yamato's Dad respects his teenage son's right to be independant and just let him go his own way. They both didn't handle the divorce that great and have a wierd relationship with Natsuko, Yamato's mom and Hiroaki's ex-wife. Yamato barely says anything to her, and when he does it's oddly softspoken. It's odd, though, that later Hiroaki and Natsuko can be seen holding hands. The most talked about portion of Yamato in Season One, and my personal favorite villain, is the Pinnochio/Puppetmon arc. Takeru picked the perfect time to go on his "I need to be independant! I want to be grown up, too!" rant-- something Yamato wasn't really ready for, not made any better by Jurei/Cherrymon. Although Yamato has already had alot of insight-- more than most Digidestined, really, after he leaves the group and comes in contact with the Dark World (later explored in Season Zero Two with Hikari and Ken), you really got to see what was going on in his mind. It wasn't just his brother, he had his own little inner conflict to settle. I don't know how accurately the translation was done for the dub, and personally I wish WPP would get to that part in their subtitles, but it seemed that most of the problem was Yamato learning to let go of his negative feelings and embrace good memories and try to move past the divorce. I think his crest's symbol of the ying-yang is really important here, because of how the dark balance overtook the light balance not only in the Digital World, but inside Yamato's heart. It's similar to Kingdom Heart's Riku, where you have to learn to live in a meduim of gray, instead of seeing everything as black or white. Other Biased Thoughts: I mentioned earlier that fans love to write Yamato's Dad as the bad guy. I like to take a different approach with Nancy/Natsuko. I figure she may have been the one that initiated the divorce and is viewed as the one that took Takeru away from Yamato. He probably holds alot of resenment towards her for that. I've kind of reversed the stereotypical fanfic role by making Nancy the source of Yamato's inner conflict. Usually I take it to the extreme in terms of rape/incest, but if you want a more plausible theory, I feel that Nancy probably holds resentment towards her son because he chose his father over her during the divorce. I'm also a huge fan of Mimato, and Taito/Yamaken to a lesser extent. I could probably make a Mimato shrine also, if I wanted to, but my gf is a huge fan of Jyoumato, and drew me into it as well. I want to go into the other couplings here, but there's a link for that on the main page. ^^; Notable Episodes: "Garurumon" / "Blue Wolf! Garurumon!" - In this episode, Gabumon first digivolves to his champion form, Garurumon. It also shows some insight to Yamato's past (although mistranslated in the dub), as well as Yamato's overprotective nature for Takeru. Also, Yamato's musical talent is revealed. ^^ "Subzero Ice Punch!" / "The Clash of the Frozen Digimon!" - In this episode, it's the first big fight between Yamato and Taichi, really, even though they had squabbles before. The further extent of Yamato wanting to protect Takeru is shown here, as well as an amusing insight into Gabumon. "The Piximon Cometh!" / "???" - Yamato obtains his crest in this episode. "WereGarurumon's Diner" / "???" - Probably the basis of the Jyoumato fandom altogether, this episode is notable because Garurumon finally evolves into his ultimate form, WereGarurumon. It also shows that Yamato isn't cold or heartless towards everyone else, it's just that he has put Takeru (then the others) before himself. There's some more harmonica playing here, too. "Return to Heighten View Terrace" / "???" - There's a few tidbits of insight into Yamato and Takeru's life before the divorce. "Out on the Town" / "???" - Yamato and Takeru have alot of interaction in this episode. It's also one of the few times in the series Yamato tears up and Yamato and Takeru are one of the first to fight Myotismon by themselves. "City Under Seige" / "???" - Yamato is almost strangled by Phantomon, and in put in charge of watching Hikari. It's really a more Jyou-centered episode, I suppose.. >> "Prophecy, The Battle for Earth" / "???" - During this arc, Gabumon obtains the ability to warp evolve into MetalGarurumon. There's alot of interaction with Yamato, Takeru, and their parents, as well as the start of Yamato's inner conflict taking a toll on himself and the group. "Playing Games, Trash Day, The Ultimate Clash" / "???" - The Puppetmon arc, Yamato-goes-evil-arc, Yamato's-emo-arc, whatever you want to call it. Yamato's personal problems arise and for the first time there's some real conflict between the two brothers. Yamato voices to Gabumon his feelings after he freaks out when his crest won't glow (scary!). Yamato fights with Taichi, the balance is uber-disrupted, and furthermore, Yamato leaves the group. He also kills Puppetmon in the next episode during a brief appearance. "The Crest of Friendship" / "???" - You'd think the title would say it all? Yamato solves his problems and there's a bit of Sorato trying to overshadow the Jyoumato in this episode. It also develops the idea of the Dark Ocean in the form of a cave, later used by Hikari and Ken in Season Two. "Peidmon's Last Jest" / "???" - More of Takeru-centered episode, but Yamato has a few moments. It's notable that Gomamon gets the Yamato keychain for Takeru, as well. "Now, Apocalymon, The Fate of Two Worlds" / "???" - Yamato shares some insight about his crest when he's pure data with everyone else. In the final episode, there's yet more harmonica playing and a little "I don't need to talk, you get it" moment between him and Gabumon. Note: This information was gathered from various places throughout the net. If anything is inaccurate, blame my sources, not me. ^^; Most information was taken from the English dub and the first episode of the Japanese, such as school, grade, and age.
